HOW TO MAKE A BANANA SPLIT

A whimsical, quintessentially American invention. Here is the classic version – and one that could be over-the-top. Use your imagination and taste favorites to create your own version!

THE CLASSIC VERSION:

Serves One

1 banana
1 scoop, vanilla ice cream
1 scoop, chocolate ice cream
1 scoop, strawberry ice cream

1-2 tablespoons, chocolate sauce
1-2 tablespoons, marshmallow crème
1-2 tablespoons, strawberry sauce

chopped nuts
sweetened whipped cream
maraschino cherry (1 or 3, as desired)

Peel the banana, and slice in half, lengthwise. Place it in a shallow oval dish (or, better yet, a banana split dish!).

Place each scoop of ice cream between the halves of the banana, in a row. Top each ice cream with selected sauce or topping: chocolate sauce on vanilla, marshmallow crème on chocolate, strawberry sauce on strawberry.

Sprinkle chopped nuts over all. Top with whipped cream, then set a maraschino cherry on top (or place one cherry on top of each scoop).

BIG-TIME ULTRA-DELUXE BANANA SPLIT

Serves One

The concept: Use unusual or creative flavors of ice creams and toppings. Make your own, or use store-bought ingredients.

Suggestion:

1 banana (peeled, split in half lengthwise)
1 scoop, homemade chocolate ice cream* (or mocha java, or…?)
1 scoop, homemade cherry ice cream*
1 scoop, banana ice cream

1-2 tablespoons, hot fudge sauce*
1-2 tablespoons, homemade cherry sauce*
1-2 tablespoons, crushed pineapple (optional: stir in toasted coconut)

chopped, roasted macadamia nuts, peanuts or pecans
whipped cream
maraschino cherries (1 or 3, as described in classic recipe)

Peel the banana, and slice in half, lengthwise. Place it in a shallow oval dish (or, better yet, a banana split dish!).

Place each scoop of ice cream between the halves of the banana, in a row. Top each ice cream with selected sauce or topping: hot fudge sauce on chocolate ice cream, cherry sauce on cherry ice cream, and crushed pineapple (with toasted coconut, if using) on banana ice cream.

Sprinkle chopped nuts over all. Top with whipped cream, then set a maraschino cherry on top (or place one cherry on top of each scoop).

Variation: substitute butter pecan ice cream** and burnt sugar sauce** or butterscotch sauce* for the banana ice cream topped with chopped pineapple and toasted coconut – or simply ADD this combination to make a 4-scoop banana split!!
