Jumping from Leni's question about cool meals in the hot summer, tuna salad is traditional - on a bed of lettuce, in sandwiches, in a tomato/bell pepper bowl, for example.

When I was small, I used to put potato chips for texture in a tuna salad sandwich. When my kids were home, a healthier version of crunch was adding diced jicama and red bell pepper to the tuna salad mixture. Another nice touch was adding smoked salt, but I haven't been able to find that for years.

What are some ordinary or unusual ingredients / seasonings you've added to tuna salad?

I used to eat it with potato chips. too. Mine's pretty simple...I usually make tuna salad with mayo (not too much), dill (fresh or dried), celery, salt and pepper. I like the solid white albacore tuna packed in water...Bumble Bee is good.

My dad used to make a unique tuna salad: he added diced avocado, diced hard boiled eggs & canned baby peas to tuna & mayo. It gives it a rather green tint & might creep someone out, but it's what we grew up with & we loved it!

My father in law always added pickle "juice" from a jar of pickles-yummy!

I've never added avocado, but I do like hard boiled eggs and celery, with onion in my tuna salad. Yummy. I think I will make some tomorrow.

I make a basic tossed green salad with celery, radishes, avocado, green onion, carrots, and various lettuces. I also add hard boiled eggs that are chopped along with a can of tuna. The dressing is Best Foods with a clove of garlic that is put through a garlic press. Finish with a little bit of fresh ground pepper. Toss everything together and serve with cheese bread and/or a can of B&M baked beans.

I love tuna salad. I used to love potato chips in a sandwich too. Now I make (solid, white) tuna w/Best Foods; a can of chopped ripe olives; grated carrot; frozen petite peas (no need to thaw); chopped sliced water chestnuts; and the secret seasoning is Worchestershire sauce.

On a bed of lettuce or on wheat toast.

In one version I add diced apples.

Another I add frozen peas.

Sometimes I stretch it by mixing it with lettuce and small pasta shells with a Kraft Green Goddess Dressing and a sprinkling of any bbq rub.

Sounds good! However I always add white diced onion to my tuna to help reel in the fish flavor a bit.

I knew a guy I used to work with the like to mix in egg salad with his tuna fish. I thought this was weird until he gave me half of his sandwich it wasn't bad although I've never made him that way. I think this mixture (purely speculation) Came about when he was making his lunch and only had a small amount of each and mix them together. After that I believe he always put egg salad with his tuna. A little weird but you asked

That's how my mom did it and so do I. Two hardboiled eggs to a can of tuna with Best Foods Mayo.
