I am hoping someone can help. I grew up in the LA School District. I attending Northridge Jr High between 1970 and 1973. If I was lucky enough to buy lunch, I would always, I be always get the rice and gravy for a nickle. It was an ice cream scoop of white rice, that stuck together and a laddle of a brown gravy.
I thought maybe someone worked in the cafeteria and might know how it was made. I have tried making it from scratch and from mixes over the years and nothing.

I remember that! I used to buy the same thing at lunch whenever I could!!!

Sorry I don't know the recipe for that gravy, but I'll be watching in the hope that someone else has it!

It sounds like they used short grain rice, or as some call it, "Sticky Rice." You probably can find it any asian market.

As for the gravy, any good beef gravy should do.

Have you tried going to your local school and asking them for the recipe if they still make it?
