Any of you ever try Swai? It's the new fish I saw at Pavilion's yesterday.

This was last night's dinner:

I Googled Swai and it says it's a Vietnamese catfish. The picture does not look like any catfish I've ever seen.

The taste was very mild. The cost was very inexpensive at $2.74 for two large filets. That is only one filet on my plate.

I'd buy it again, but I don't think I like corn meal as a coating. Too grainy!

I tried it a few times a couple of years ago. Not impressed. Yes, very cheap. To my palate, there is sort of an odd layer to the (bland) flavor profile.

I've since chosen to pass it up.

There seems to be no textural or flavor comparison to what what we think of as "catfish."

I'll bet there's a reason it's the most inexpensive fish in most regular markets - wonder what it is.... If you buy it at 99 Ranch, it's even cheaper by the frozen bag.

I used to buy orange roughy by the bag, frozen at Costco. Loved it, but I haven't seen it in years.

Someone said that Swai comes from a very poluted delta. Think I'll pass it up from now on.

Eating fish is supposed to be healthy. It's just so expensive now.

Yes, Swai is very controversial and the so called "Catfish War continues! I baked some Swai a while back and my husband loved it because it reminded him of the catfish back home in Kansas only a bit more mild. I'm just not convinced that farm raised fish, from any country, is a good thing. On the defense of Swai, it is an affordable fish, low in mercury and does take well to defrosting, if you do it properly. I think Swai is here to stay.... Meanwhile, I'm sticking to fresh True Cod, my favorite white fish, right up there with halibut.

Mar, I must admit -- your Swai dinner picture does really really good! Actually, you may have convinced me to try it one more time, if nothing else, because Bill really did love it!

Thanks. :)

I'll have to give it one more try. Being unemployed has really taken a bite out of the way I cook. I might try Panko crumbs the next time.

I just don't think I could pan fry it without a coating of some type like I do with snapper.
