I sometimes talk about my experiences commercial fishing . I just thought you might like to see the type of fishing that I did. These are albacore I look to be between the 15 to 20 pound range. I am not in this clip or do I know anybody in the clip. These fish are usually sold to star-kiss or bumblebee to be canned as fancy albacore that you buy in the stores. Last year I fish was 1980 and we were getting $1600 a ton for these fish. Not great money but a lot of fun. If you're a fisherman. On a good day we would put 4 ton on board. Roughly a ton per hour with three people in the rack. Anyway, here's the way I used to fish.

How'd you get them off the line so fast?

Good Lord! It looks like an assembly line. How on earth did the fish get off the hook so fast?

here's some pictures of the Jack pole that they are holding wonders the but and that you hold onto and the other with the wrapping is how the squid jig attaches. They other picture is of a jig that they call a squid as you can see there is no Barb on the hook and it is not been around very far and is almost straight. When the fish bites and you are pulling on your pole, once you get his head headed up and he comes out the water you just give it a little slack about 10 or 11 o'clock positioning of the pole and the fish comes unhooked and drops on deck and then you slap it back in the water and move your pole to make a jig look like a squid swimming in the water. What they are not showing here is after you catch all of fish that want to eat with this squid jig you switch poles to abate pole which has a hook like a fish hook. But again with no Barb. The by the end of the pole sits in a saddle that is like what you would hold a flagpole. If you're in a marching band and it has a deep horseshoe 2 to 3 inches deep made out a leather and this is where the blood into the pole sits one your are pulling the bigger fish in. When you are bait fishing with this type of rig you line the pole up with the center of your face or center of your body and pull straight toward your body then the fish is coming at you directly at you. I am right-handed so the fish went under my left arm where you unhooked it and drop it on deck and grab another anchovy which is in a small bait receiver on the gunwale of the boat. We never did take any pictures of us. Fishing because we are too busy making money. On the boat I was fishing. We had a 12 foot plank off of the bow and in 1988 . I harpooned a 675 pound swordfish on our way into San Francisco that fish sold for $3.50 a pound and after it was guilt gutted dressed. It was 450 pounds. I wish I would've got all that money but I only got my share and the boat took that big share but the other crewmembers also that shares.
so the answer to your question is actually the picture of the squid jig ours were a little different. They were a chrome ahead and hook like you see, but we had white leather and white feathers tied just below the head of the jig.we also did not use monofilament line. We use eight strand braided stainless steel cable with piano wire ends. We never did have a problem with the exception of one or two times of this breaking. Okay here's a fish story. LOL. I do remember a big eye tuna had to be in the neighborhood of 275 pounds bit my pole and the first thing I said was get the gaffe just add a reflex that fish turned sideways looked at me and said bye-bye and it snapped that eight strand braided stainless steel wire like it was a piece of kite thread.

At the end of the day the captains would all talk on the radio and get their fish count so they could decide which direction they were again ahead. That evening and sometimes we ran all night long to get to where we wanted to be. the boat with the highest count was called the" high liner" which are boat was many times. A good day would be four hours of fishing usually towards evening into dark and putting four tons of albacore on board. Now that was a payday. The last year I fish. We did this four times.

I don't think I could get out of bed for a week if I tried fishing. You know how females aren't built the same way as men and therefore are unable to throw a baseball like a man? I bet that applies to fishing. I am not sure a female (at least this female) could sling a fish back over my shoulder like that.

bugs it is very hard work at the end of a good day. I didn't even want to eat or cook and the rest of crew just wanted to sleep after the work was done, which went well into the evening. Maybe 9 PM putting the fish in the fish hold. We just wanted to sleep. You know you bring up the point of women versus men. And there are some women that I think could do this but here's another interesting thing that I found out about men. Men cannot reach the middle of their back where a woman can reach their no problem. I guess it's from cooking bra straps. LOL that is most men can't bend their arm up in say scratch your back in that area. I'm sure some can but I sure can't. I'm still laughing your about posting this LOL

I only knew one girl who could throw a baseball like a man. She was so good she could throw the ball clear across the field. She was built and looked like a fullback and even though she married I still question which side her bread is buttered on. Me? I was lucky if I could throw a ball 10 feet. I wonder how many calories you guys would burn on your fishing trips? I bet you came back 5 pounds lighter.
